Let us take the anxiety out of your visit

Oral Sedation and Dental Anxiety

It's normal for patients of all ages to experience anxiety when going to the dentist. Some people would rather suffer with a toothache than visit a dentist's office, but neglecting your dental health can lead to even more painful operations down the road. Whether you're scheduled for a root canal, or you're just getting your teeth cleaned, oral sedation can help take the stress out of your next dentist appointment.

About to Oral Sedation Dentistry
Sedatives are medications designed to relax the mind and body. They can be administered intravenously, as a gas or orally in pill form. Doctors prescribe these medications to address a number of a health issues, but sedatives are also used to help patients relax prior to medical procedures. Since going to the dentist is such a common fear, many dental care facilities offer a variety of sedation options. In fact, sedation is recommended for patients undergoing multiple procedures during a single visit.

The Benefits of Oral Sedation
Aside from alleviating fear and discomfort, oral sedatives make dental procedures easier by reducing tooth sensitivity and relaxing the gag reflex. Oral sedatives do not put you to sleep; you will remain conscious during your appointment, yet you will be in a blissful and subdued state. Since most people prefer taking pills over being attached to an IV, oral sedation is especially popular among patients who are afraid of needles. If you're getting a cavity filled, then you may still need a shot of local anesthetic, but the effects of the oral sedative will lessen your anxiety.

Oral Sedation Methods
Oral sedatives used in dental offices include drugs like diazepam, triazolam and lorazepam among others. If you're going in for a major procedure, your dentist may prescribe medication to take at home before your appointment. Oral sedatives are stronger than nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, but it takes longer to feel their effects, and the effects linger for longer. Therefore, you should arrange transportation to and from your appointment so that you don't have to drive under the influence. Oral sedatives are safe for most adults and children, but be sure to tell your dentist if you're taking any other drugs.
